Washington area artist, Alice-Marie Gravely, will exhibit recent print explorations
and other new works in October at Foundry Gallery. In conjunction with the exhibition,
she will conduct a children’s workshop on symbols in art. Children from the age of five
and up are invited to attend the arts workshop with their parents at the Foundry Gallery,
Sunday, October 7 from 1-3 pm. Participants will learn about various cultural symbols
including those from native American, African, Jewish, Celtic, and other cultures.
There will be an arts project where children and adults can create their own "symbol."
The workshop is free but please register by calling: 202-287-0203.
Alice-Marie works in varied media: oil, acrylic, watercolor, collage and printmaking
techniques. Her work has been described as "sophisticated, intricate, and diverse."
With a background in filmmaking her latest prints have the density of several film
stills layered together. This most recent work uses innovative printmaking techniques
that include photographic plates, found objects, and the drawn mark to create one of a
kind prints. Inspired by an Easter trip to Spain they invoke both the noise of the
holiday crowds as well as the sanctity of the events.
She has a Masters degree in Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University and worked for
twenty years in corporate communications creating films and videos. She began a second
career in the fine arts. "After several years of recording reality with film and video,
it is no wonder I now have a passion for the abstraction or maybe better stated,
distraction," says Gravely. "The use of a variety of media and materials in my work
reflects the perplexity of today’s society with its diversions and intrusions."
Gravely’s work has been featured in Watercolor magazine, published by American Artists.
She is a member of numerous arts organization including A Salon and the Yellow Barn
Gallery in Glen Echo and has shown work in many group exhibitions. Her work has also
been exhibited in the National Arts Club in New York and at SVC Gallery on Nantucket.
This is her second exhibition at the Foundry.
